Training Series: Supporting Trans Survivors of Gender-Based Violence
This training provides an overview of gender-based violence (GBV) in Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Diverse communities, highlighting the scale of the issue through statistics, research, and the intersections of race, class, disability, and neurodiversity. It explores the concept of trans misogyny, including its role in the current political climate and the impact of widespread anti-trans misinformation, while also equipping participants with foundational Trans 101 language and tools for continued learning. By the end of the training, participants will understand the risk factors and barriers trans survivors face, define trans misogyny within the GBV movement, and feel more confident in implementing best practices to support Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Diverse survivors.
The Supporting Trans Survivors Training Series is a series of three (3) sessions. No previous attendance is required to attend the later sessions. Session 3:
Learning Objectives:- Have tools to evaluate organizational policies for equity
- Have tools and language on how to ask trans sensitive questions on surveys & program evaluations.
- Understand key ways to engage in advocacy skills within our organizations and with survivors - i.e. affirming experiences, connecting to larger struggles of gbv movement, ending isolation of individuals,
- Have tools to navigate uncomfortable conversations or invasive questions by colleagues or other program participants about trans people.
Summary: This training will focus on application of advocacy skills for addressing gender-based violence (GBV) in Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Diverse communities. Participants will spend the time evaluating examples of the realities of transgender survivors and discussing what steps they would take and what tools they would utilize to ensure survivors receive trauma-informed, culturally relevant support in formal settings.
By the end of the training, participants will have increased confidence in their ability to implement best practices to support Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Diverse survivors.
Outcomes: This training will focus on practice and application of advocacy skills to support Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Diverse people who have or are surviving intimate partner violence. We will briefly review the skills from the previous two trainings then provide scenarios that webinar attendees will be able to utilize for skillbuilding and application in small groups. Attendees will also be provided with a list of resources, tools, and other materials that advocates can refer back to during their advocacy.

A little about our facilitators,
Danni Askini (she/they) is a nationally recognized transgender activist, policy expert, and Executive Director of Gender Justice League. With over two decades of experience, they have led efforts to secure gender-affirming healthcare protections, co-founded the Coalition for Inclusive Healthcare, and fought anti-trans ballot measures. Their work spans gender-based violence prevention, healthcare access, and trans civil rights.
Danni has trained domestic violence service providers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers on trans misogyny, survivor advocacy, and the structural barriers transgender women face. Their expertise includes the intersections of race, class, disability, and neurodiversity in gender-based violence, as well as countering anti-trans misinformation campaigns.
A survivor of gender-based violence themselves, Danni’s work is grounded in community resilience, harm reduction, and trauma-informed advocacy. Through this training, they will provide a critical analysis of the current political climate and practical tools to help service providers and advocates better support Two-Spirit, Trans, and Gender Diverse survivors.
Jesse Bohlin was born and raised in northern Indiana, on the traditional homelands of the Pottawatomie and Dawa (Ottawa) Nations. Now, they live in Tacoma on the unceded ancestral lands of the Coast Salish, namely Puyallup, peoples. They have a BS in Agronomy and BA in Gender Studies from Purdue University. In June 2024, they earned their Master of Social Work from University of Washington Tacoma.
As an independent consultant, Jesse brings their experience as a researcher and domestic and sexual violence advocate to their work. They specifically focus on developing training and curriculum that centers on transgender and BIPOC experiences to help educate the public and advocates on how to support transgender survivors best. During their Masters, they specifically focused on interviewing transgender survivors about their experiences seeking help from friends and family and developing a curriculum for transgender individuals and their allies to support survivors in their communities.
